Transfer of Urine to BD Tubes using Urine Cup with Needle in the Lid:
1. Specimen should be placed in preservative tubes within 1 hour of collection
2. Ensure the lid is tightly closed and gently swirl the urine to achieve a well-mixed specimen. The cup should not be inverted for mixing purposes as the lid will leak.
3. Push BD C&S Preservative tube (gray top), Yellow and Red Tiger top tube with preservatives (urinalysis) and/or the Yellow top tube with no preservatives (urinalysis) into the opening recessed into the specimen lid. NOTE: THE URINE COLLECTION CUP CONTAINS A NEEDLE. Please keep your fingers away from the recessed opening as a needle stick injury could occur.
4. Firmly push the tube until urine flow into the tube begins. Hold in position until the flow stops. Once the flow has stopped, remove the tube. Repeat if more tubes are needed for testing.
5. Tubes should be mixed to ensure preservatives are well mixed with the samples for optimal results.
6. Label the tube(s) with the patient’s full name and date of birth.
7. Place the tube(s) into a biohazard bag with the appropriate requisition.
8. NOTE: THE URINE COLLECTION CUP CONTAINS A NEEDLE. DO NOT SHIP THE URINE CUP WITH THE NEEDLE BACK TO THE LAB. Urine collection cup should be used to collect the sample, fill the BD Urine Vacutainer tubes and discarded according to your company/facility policy.
9. Transport the tube to the laboratory for testing.

2. Push BD C&S Preservative tube (gray top), Yellow and Red Tiger top tube with preservatives (urinalysis) and/or the Yellow top tube with no preservatives (urinalysis) into the opening in the cap of the straw. NOTE: THE URINE COLLECTION STRAW CONTAINS A NEEDLE. Please keep your fingers away from the recessed opening as a needle stick injury could occur.
3. Push BD tube into the transfer straw all the way.
4. Hold in position until the flow stops. Repeat if more tubes are needed for testing
5. Remove specimen and straw from the urine specimen container.
6. Mix tubes approximately 10-15 times to ensure preservatives are well mixed with the samples for optimal results.
7. Label the tube with the patient’s name and the date of birth or medical record number.
8. Place the tube into the biohazard bag with pad.
9. BD Urine Straw MUST be discarded according to your company/facility policy.
Do not send the cup with the needle or the straw with the needle back to the lab. Only samples in the BD tubes should be returned to the Laboratory for testing.
